What's Really Happening in Tech
Despite the layoffs, IT professionals are in high demand.
At Bevertec, we have seen an increase in the number of roles within this industry. The need for individuals with technical skill sets is found in both the public and private sectors.
The IT industry is evolving and organizations need skilled workers who are able to adapt to these changes.
While the number of lay-offs appear to be considerable this is not necessarily the case. Over the past four years (2018 to 2022) Microsoft added approximately 90,000 roles. The organization plans to lay-off 10,000 employees by the the third quarter of their financial calendar, which would be the month of June.
Collectively, organizations, Google, Microsoft, Spotify, Amazon, Meta, Salesforce, Shopify and Wayfair, have created over 1 million roles over the past four years, ranging from 2018 to 2022.
By analyzing the announcements released by the organizations, it is clear that companies hired too many people. Spending resources on maintaining and attracting new talent has become increasingly difficult as the current economic standing increases the costs of living. This outcome was expected as the organizations, during the pandemic, expanded their workforce in large numbers. Top trends within this industry include artificial intelligence, machine learning, and cybersecurity.
